Peyronie’s disease
Peyronie’s disease causes
The main cause of Peyronie’s disease is micro- and macro-traumas of the penis, which can appear during sexual intercourse. Dense scars (plaques) form in the place of the trauma, causing deformation and curvature. There is also the autoimmune theory of the origin of this disease, in which the appearance of plaques is caused by an attack of the body’s own cells.

In addition, the development of Peyronie’s disease may be influenced by the following factors:

immune system disorders;
metabolic pathology;
Diabetes mellitus, gout;
Connective tissue diseases;
Atherosclerosis.
Peyronie’s disease symptoms
The main symptom of the disease is the deformation, curvature of the penis during erection. Its deviation from the median axis may have varying degrees of severity, the penis may deviate to the right or left, as well as up or down. Under the skin of the organ there are seals – plaques, palpation of which is painful for a man. The patient may also have painful or weakened erection, a reduction in the size of the penis due to its curvature.

With a mild degree of curvature, the patient may feel a little discomfort during intercourse. With a pronounced degree (deviation of more than 50-60 degrees), the performance of sexual intercourse becomes impossible, as it causes the man sharp pain in the genital area. Manifestations of Peyronie’s disease tend to progress.

Treatment methods
Treatment of Peyronie’s disease can be conservative or surgical. In the early stages, conservative treatment is prescribed: connective tissue secretion inhibitors, vitamin therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs.

Surgical treatment is more effective. Over time, the plaques calcify, their removal is only possible by surgery. The cost of Peyronie’s surgery depends on the degree of curvature of the penis and the chosen method of treatment.

How is Peyronie’s disease treated?
The surgical intervention is performed most often under general anesthesia and lasts about 2.5-3 hours. Postoperative stitches are made of absorbable material.

There are 3 variants of surgical intervention:

Curvature of the penis is corrected by suturing the projection of the plaque, the plaque itself is not removed. This operation is performed most often, but after it a slight shortening of the penis is possible, as there is a shortening of the cavernous body.
Grafting. The plaque is completely excised, the lack of sheath is compensated by a patch, which is made from the patient’s vein, cheek mucosa, synthetic material.
Phalloprosthetics. It is indicated for patients suffering from pronounced scar changes and extreme erectile dysfunction. A pump-controlled device is implanted into the penis body to induce an erection.
